HOW LONG DO BASENJIS LIVE?

Basenjis have a life span of 12 to 14 years. Plan to have your Basenji companion around for a while!!



HOW BIG DO BASENJIS GET?

Basenji males range in weight from 20 to 30 pounds and females from 15 to 25 pounds. Females 16" at the shoulder, Males 17" at the shoulder.



ARE BASENJIS MUTE?

No, Basenjis make a noise called yodeling. They also howl, growl, scream (which is an aweful sound), cry, and sometimes they sound like they bark with their roo-roo noise. I have some sounds Basenjis make on the Basenji Sounds page.



WHY DON'T BASENJIS BARK?

They are capable of barking, but they do not chose to. The larynx of a Basenji is not located in the same place as it is for other breeds, which causes their sounds to be different.



ARE BASENJIS GOOD APARTMENT DOGS?

Some breeders claim they are, however, unless you can take at least an hour a day to exercise them (walking and or running) I would not suggest them being left in an apartment all day. You will eventually come home to a lot of damage due to boredom. I would suggest an apartment for the older more calm Basenjis, not the puppies.

 

 

 

ARE BASENJIS REALLY DISTRUCTIVE?

Yes, Basenji's are very distructive for about the first year and a half. They are very mischievious and tend to get into things they shouldn't. I keep mine in plenty of toys  and lots of exercise to keep them occupied.

DO BASENJIS SHED?

Yes, they do shed, although it is minimal due to how short their hair is.



ARE BASENJIS GOOD DOGS FOR PEOPLE WITH ALERGIES?

Yes, most people will not be alergic to the Basenji because of the shortness of its fur, although some people are.



ARE BASENJIS ESCAPE ARTISTS?

YES, Basenjis can climb fences, dig under, and jump great heights. If there is a way, there is a will with a Basenji!

You will be fixing holes, and fences for a long time before you get it Basenji proof.



ARE BASENJIS GOOD WITH CHILDREN?

If a Basenji is raised with children, I do not forsee any troubles. But on the other hand to insure this, you must teach your child to respect the basenji and treat it with kindness.



WILL A MALE OR FEMALE MAKE A BETTER PET?

Either are good pets and will get along with other dogs and children if you get them as pups and raise them together. Males tend not to get along with other males, and females tend not to get along with other females as adults. It is best to get them spayed/neutered.

 

 

DO BASENJIS REALLY HATE WATER?

 

Most do, although in the 15 years I have been breeding, I have had 2 that love the water.

 

 

DO DOGS SEE COLORS?

 

Behavioral tests in dogs suggest that they can distinguish red and blue colors but often confuse green and red.

THE BASENJI IS NOT LONG OUT OF AFRICA, THEREFORE IS NOT AS DOMESTICATED AS OTHER BREEDS!! PLEASE RESPECT IT'S PRIVACY AND LEAVE IT ALONE WHILE EATING AND RESTING. BUT DO NOT BY ANY MEANS LET IT GET AWAY WITH EVERYTHING !!
